Student Affairs Coaching FAQs

  • Patrick has been coaching for much of his career. He started coaching in the 1990s when he was a full-time professor. He began with his master's and doctoral students during their programs. Afterwards, when they settled into positions, they reached out to him for advice, counsel, and coaching on leadership, managing others, conflicts, politics, job searching, and negotiating new offers. His former students and staff then referred others to him. He has coached individuals across a spectrum of positions, including VPSAs, Deans, and other upper-level administrators.

  • Patrick's professional life has been about bringing out the best in people, units, and organizations to serve others. His goal is to leave the world a better place. That was his quest as an RA many years ago when he started, and it has been his intention in every administrative, leadership, and faculty position since then. It is why he chose to make a dramatic change mid-career and pursue a career as a college professor preparing student affairs professionals, leadership, and researchers. And, it is why he later shifted back to administration when he realized that his ability to enhance the lives of others would be greatly expanded. He brings this passion to every coaching relationship.

  • Patrick has a master's degree in Counseling Psychology and has often stated that the skills and perspectives learned in that program have informed his practice throughout his career--as a manager, a leader, a teacher, and a coach. Additionally, he has a doctorate in Higher Education and Student Affairs, more that 40 years of academic and student affairs experience, and decades of coaching individuals and training groups.

  • One of the unique aspects of Patrick's experience is that in his career he has worked in administration, then became a faculty member, earned tenure at a research university and was promoted to Associate Professor, and then returned to administration and attained high level positions in both academic affairs (Associate Provost, Graduate Program Director) and student affairs (Vice President for Student Affairs). There are few others who followed this trajectory. And, he brings this lived organizational and cultural experience to his listening in all coaching relationships.
