By the Numbers: Patrick and Bayley's Excellent Student Affairs Adventure
On Saturday, September 16th, my dog and I set out on Patrick and Bayley's Excellent Student Affairs Adventure, a nationwide speaking tour focused on professional development in student affairs. While I'll reflect on the experience in additional posts in the coming weeks, I start with the tour by the numbers:
I drove 9217 miles (the longest driving day was also the last driving day: Shaker Heights, OH to home - 550 miles).
We traveled through 22 states.
We were on the road for 51 days.
We stayed in 34 different places.
I ate 34 Snickers bars (I brought a case of 48 with me).
I consumed 17 5-Hour Energy bottles (I brought a case of 24 with me).
I presented at 17 institutions (furthest east - University at Albany; furthest north - Spokane Community College; furthest west - University of Oregon; furthest south - University of California - San Diego)
I conducted 20 presentations at these 17 institutions.
I presented on 7 topics:
· Pervasive leadership (4 times)
· Disrupting yourself (4 times)
· Building a culture of innovation (3 times)
· Unconventional leadership (3 times)
· Competencies for working in a complex world (2 times)
· Lessons from the experience economy (2 times)
· High quality customer service (once)
· These only add up to 19 because the 20th was a Careers in Student Affairs keynote at Montana State that I gave in addition to a staff presentation
I presented to approximately 800 professional staff.
It took me 10 months of steady work to plan and prepare for this trip.
I will share observations, reflections, and lessons in forthcoming posts, but if you have any questions feel free to reach out to me either here or at patrick@drpatricklove.org.
